Ozymandias, And Despair update!
Finally got to that update I was talking about!
After a weekend at Convergence Con in Hamilton, I've finally made some much needed additions and changes to Ozymandias.
The first, and biggest, being example cultures! I've provided some rules reference sheets, along with these. In that document you'll find 4 beautiful little cultures to kickstart your game of Ozymandias. While you're encouraged to build your own cultures, I think these are a real blast to play with, and I've designed them to bounce off each other in really fascinating ways. I'm quite proud of them, and I'm excited to see where people take these little guys.
Additionally, I've added a few more starting questions, which I think will lead you and your players towards building cultures that are a little more unique when it comes to how they feel, how they act, and how they play. I find these new additions are some of the most evocative of the questions provided, and provide a much stronger idea of what your culture is like.
The last, and simplest, change, is to how Tyrannies work. While players can absolutely take charge of Tyrannies if they want to, I've made the default position of the game one that discourages this. Having one player in charge of a Tyranny can cause a bunch of problems on both ends. It forces one player to act as the 'bad guy', and puts them into a situation of enacting some distressing projects. It also makes it a lot easier for conflicts to turn sour, with one player being 'responsible' for destroying or harming other players cultures, and in turn, their ideas. It goes against the spirit of the game, and while I can't prevent you from doing otherwise, I think you'll have a much better time with these new rules. Plus, it gives everyone a lot more leniency when it comes to being the 'bad guy', it's everyone's responsibility.
Have fun everyone. I don't know if I'll update Ozymandias anymore in the future, but who knows. Meitaki Maata,
Eamonn.
